GKN Aerospace creates new wing

GKN Aerospace has confirmed the delivery of wing components to be used for the Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe (BLADE) project. The BLADE initiative is part of the Clean Sky Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft (SWFA) programme aimed at lowering fuel consumption and emissions by reducing aircraft drag. During flight tests on an A340 aircraft, scheduled for 2017, the GKN-manufactured wing section will be used to test the performance characteristics of natural laminar flow wing architecture, which is expected to reduce wing drag by eight per cent and improve fuel consumption by nearly five per cent.”
